Why can't I take books out using the self service machine at UCR?

If there is a problem with the actual book or your library account a red message will come up on the self service machine - and you will not be able to borrow anything until the issue is resolved - you need to speak to a member of Library staff to sort it out.

The reasons for this could be:

  • You owe historic fines - you will need to speak to a member of Library staff to clear your account.
  • You have overdue books - in which case you also owe fines
    • You need to speak to a member of Library staff to clear your fines
    • You can renew your books on the machine - but you will still owe fines until your account is cleared by a member of Library staff.
  • The book may not have been returned properly by the previous borrower - you will need to speak to a member of staff.
